{"id":274247,"date":"2017-02-13T10:55:39","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T15:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rael.org\/?p=274247"},"modified":"2020-10-26T01:42:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T05:42:07","slug":"pakistan-court-deems-valentines-day-un-islamic-bans-across-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noproxy.rael.org\/da\/pakistan-court-deems-valentines-day-un-islamic-bans-across-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan court deems Valentine\u2019s Day \u2018un-Islamic\u2019 bans across country"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>RAEL\u2019S COMMENT:<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Another Muslim stupidity \u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Valentine\u2019s Day has effectively been banned in Pakistan after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruled on Monday to prohibit marking the occasion in public spaces and government offices across the country, effective immediately, regional media reported.<\/p>\n<p>The court ruling came as the result of a petition started by concerned citizen Abdul Waheed, who complained that promoting the holiday in the media and across social networks is\u00a0\u201cagainst Islamic teachings and should be banned immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All print and online media outlets have been ordered to\u00a0\u201cstop all Valentine&#8217;s Day promotions,\u201d\u00a0and celebrating the occasion in public too has been banned.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Shaukat Aziz, who made the ruling, directed the Federal Ministry of Information, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and the Islamabad High Commission to start implementing the court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>On social media, many Pakistanis reacted to the court\u2019s decision with a mixture of sarcasm and dismay.<\/p>\n<p>Valentine\u2019s Day has a mixed following in Pakistan. In big cities, restaurants, delivery services and bakeries often come up with Valentine&#8217;s Day promotions, but there are also \u201cHaya Day\u201d campaigns by conservative students which promote traditional Islamic modesty. Last year, President Mamnoon Hussain said that Pakistanis should avoid celebrating Valentine\u2019s Day as it is a Western tradition that has nothing to do with Pakistan\u2019s Muslim culture.<\/p>\n<p>Valentine\u2019s Day is a tradition that may have had its origins in an ancient Roman fertility festival and was subsequently adopted by the Catholic Church to commemorate one or more Christian martyrs named Valentine, who were persecuted in the Roman Empire.
