{"id":253905,"date":"2018-08-21T13:30:50","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T17:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rael.org\/?p=253905"},"modified":"2021-04-22T18:02:19","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T22:02:19","slug":"saudi-arabia-criticised-for-48-beheadings-in-four-months-of-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noproxy.rael.org\/de\/saudi-arabia-criticised-for-48-beheadings-in-four-months-of-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia criticised for 48 beheadings in four months of 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>RAEL\u2019S COMMENT:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>The country in charge of Human Rights at the UN\u2026 lol<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rights group says half of those executed by \u2018notorious\u2019 system were on non-violent charges<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia has executed 48 people in the past four months, half of them on non-violent drug charges, Human Rights Watch has said.<\/p>\n<p>The US-based group urged the kingdom to improve what it called a \u201cnotoriously unfair criminal justice system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia has one of the world\u2019s highest rates of execution: suspects convicted of terrorism, homicide, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking face the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Rights experts have repeatedly raised concerns about the fairness of trials in the kingdom, which is governed by a strict form of Islamic law. The government says the death penalty is a deterrent for further crime.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW\u2019s Middle East director, said: \u201cIt\u2019s bad enough that Saudi Arabia executes so many people, but many of them have not committed a violent crime. Any plan to limit drug executions needs to include improvements to a justice system that doesn\u2019t provide for fair trials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HRW said Saudi Arabia had carried out nearly 600 executions since the beginning of 2014, more than a third of them in drug cases.
