Hawaii was a sovereign state until the USA decided unilaterally to annex it.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Hawaiian sovereignty movement\u00a0(Hawaiian:\u00a0ke ea Hawai\u2018i) is a grassroots\u00a0political\u00a0and\u00a0cultural\u00a0campaign to gain\u00a0sovereignty,\u00a0self-determination\u00a0and\u00a0self-governance\u00a0for Hawaiians of whole or part\u00a0Native Hawaiian\u00a0ancestry with an independent nation or kingdom.[1][2]\u00a0Some groups also advocate some form of redress from the United States for the\u00a01893 overthrow\u00a0of\u00a0Queen Lili\u02bbuokalani, and for what is described as a prolonged\u00a0military occupation\u00a0beginning with the 1898 annexation.
