A school in the Russian city of Perm, and its director, have been slapped with fines after a court found their suspension of a student, on the grounds that her hair was dyed pink, amounted to discrimination.<\/p>\n

The hairstyle saga began last month after Zinaida Agisheva, 15, returned to her gymnasium from her summer vacation sporting a dyed pink hairstyle and a modified twist on her school uniform.<\/p>\n

Describing her look as \u201cinappropriate,\u201d the school administration ruled that she could not attend classes until she rectified her appearance to coincide with the dress code.<\/p>\n

The suspension sparked outcry across Russia after a post by the girl\u2019s mother, a local politician, went viral and sparked an investigation by local prosecutors into whether the case for suspension amounted to discrimination. A court has now ruled in her favor.<\/p>\n

Finding that the school\u2019s ordinance was contrary to the Russian constitutional right to free universal education for every citizen, the court ruled that the school\u2019s uniform compliance policy did not allow them to \u201cestablish requirements for hair color and length.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, it fined the institution 50,000 rubles ($762.50) and its director 30,000 rubles ($457.50).<\/p>\n

Zinaida has since been allowed return to class.<\/p>\n

Writing on her Facebook page prior to the decision, her mother Nadezhda wrote\u00a0\u201cno majority has the right to decide what color my daughter’s hair will be dyed. This is our private life.\u201d<\/p>\n
