{"id":270579,"date":"2017-04-07T15:48:53","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T19:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rael.org\/?p=270579"},"modified":"2020-10-26T23:22:27","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T03:22:27","slug":"british-dj-given-prison-sentence-for-playing-muslim-call-to-prayer-remix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noproxy.rael.org\/fr\/british-dj-given-prison-sentence-for-playing-muslim-call-to-prayer-remix\/","title":{"rendered":"British DJ given prison sentence for playing Muslim call to prayer remix"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>RAEL\u2019S COMMENT:<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Boycott Tunisia&#8217;s tourism and products!<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A British DJ has been sentenced to a year in jail by a Tunisian court after he played a dance remix of the Muslim call to prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin-based DJ Dax J, whose real name is Dax Heddon,\u00a0played the song in a Tunisian nightclub last week\u00a0during the Orbit Festival in Tunisia\u2019s northeastern town of Nabeul.<\/p>\n<p>Heddon has been charged with offending public morality and public indecency, but was no longer in the country to appear before the court, and so is unlikely to actually serve his prison term. He has allegedly received several death threats since the incident and has closed all his social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The club was shut down after footage of Heddon\u2019s set was shared on social media and caused national outrage. In the video, revelers are seen dancing to a track containing the call for prayer, which is\u00a0issued from mosques five times a day.<\/p>\n<p>The court dismissed charges against the nightclub owner and the event\u2019s organizer, but the prosecution has since appealed arguing both should have audited the DJ\u2019s set beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not allow attacks against religious feelings and the sacred,\u201d\u00a0local governor Mnaouer Ouertani told AFP news agency after the club was closed.<\/p>\n<p>Tunisia\u2019s Religious Affairs Ministry said in a statement that\u00a0\u201cmocking the opinions and religious principles of Tunisians is absolutely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heddon has since issued an apology and the organizers of Orbit Festival have insisted that the DJ\u00a0\u201cdid not realize it might offend an audience from a Muslim country like ours.\u201d\u00a0They too apologized in the event\u2019s Facebook post, but added that they did not accept responsibility for the incident.<\/p>\n<p>There is no\u00a0\u201cblasphemy law\u201d\u00a0in Tunisia, but several other penal codes have been used to\u00a0curtail debate over religious matters\u00a0in recent years.
