French actor signs open letter that claims \u2018witch-hunt\u2019 in wake of Harvey Weinstein scandal poses threat to sexual freedom<\/p>\n

The revered French actor Catherine Deneuve has hit out at a new \u201cpuritanism\u201d sparked by sexual harassment scandals, declaring that men should be \u201cfree to hit on\u201d women.<\/p>\n

Deneuve was one of about 100 female French writers, performers and academics who wrote an open letter deploring the wave of \u201cdenunciations\u201d that has followed claims that the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein raped and sexually assaulted women over decades.<\/p>\n

They claimed the \u201cwitch-hunt\u201d that followed threatens sexual freedom.<\/p>\n

\u201cRape is a crime, but trying to seduce someone, even persistently or cack-handedly, is not \u2013 nor is men being gentlemanly a macho attack,\u201d said the letter published in the newspaper Le Monde.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen have been punished summarily, forced out of their jobs when all they did was touch someone\u2019s knee or try to steal a kiss,\u201d said the letter, which was also signed by Catherine Millet, author of the explicit 2002 bestseller The Sexual Life of Catherine M.<\/p>\n

Men had been dragged through the mud, they argued, for \u201ctalking about intimate subjects during professional dinners or for sending sexually charged messages to women who did not return their attentions\u201d.<\/p>\n

The letter attacked feminist social media campaigns like #\u001dMeToo and its French equivalent, \u001d#BalanceTonPorc (Call out your pig), for unleashing this \u201cpuritanical … wave of purification\u201d.<\/p>\n

It claimed that \u201clegitimate protest against the sexual violence that women are subject to, particularly in their professional lives,\u201d had turned into a witch-hunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat began as freeing women up to speak has today turned into the opposite \u2013 we intimidate people into speaking \u2018correctly\u2019, shout down those who don\u2019t fall into line, and those women who refused to bend [to the new realities] are regarded as complicit and traitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The signatories \u2013 who included a porn star-turned-agony aunt \u2013 claimed they were defending sexual freedom, for which \u201cthe liberty to seduce and importune was essential\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-nominated Deneuve, 74, is best known internationally for playing a bored housewife who spends her afternoons as a prostitute in Luis Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s classic 1967 film Belle de Jour.<\/p>\n

Deneuve has made no secret of her annoyance at social media campaigns to shame men accused of harassing women.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it is the right method to change things, it is excessive,\u201d she said last year, referring to the \u001d#MeToo hashtag. \u201cAfter \u2018calling out your pig\u2019 what are we going to have, \u2018call our your whore\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of helping women this frenzy to send these (male chauvinist) \u2018pigs\u2019 to the abattoir actually helps the enemies of sexual liberty \u2013 religious extremists and the worst sort of reactionaries,\u201d the collective of women who signed the letter said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs women we do not recognise ourselves in this feminism, which beyond denouncing the abuse of power takes on a hatred of men and of sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n

They insisted that women were \u201csufficiently aware that the sexual urge is by its nature wild and aggressive. But we are also clear-eyed enough not to confuse an awkward attempt to pick someone up with a sexual attack.\u201d<\/p>\n
