A UK tourist has been arrested and charged in Dubai for having \u201cextramarital sex\u201d after she reported being gang raped by two British men.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old woman was on holiday in the United Arab Emirates when the alleged attack took place last month,\u00a0according\u00a0to \u201cDetained in Dubai,\u201d a UK-based organization that \u201cassists people who have become victims of injustice\u201d in the UAE.<\/p>\n

Upon reporting the rape to local police, the woman was allegedly arrested for breaking Emirati law against extramarital sex, and faces years in prison or severe physical punishment, including flogging and stoning to death, if convicted.<\/p>\n

The unidentified woman\u2019s passport was confiscated by authorities before she was released on bail, while her alleged attackers have since flown home to Birmingham,\u00a0according\u00a0to The Sun, which reportedly spoke to a family friend of the victim.<\/p>\n

The charges have been confirmed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office,\u00a0says\u00a0Detained in Dubai, who reiterated that \u201cif the facts bear it out, [the case] deserves the utmost concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The UAE has a long history of penalizing rape victims,”\u00a0says\u00a0Radha Stirling, founder and director of Detained in Dubai.<\/p>\n

“Police regularly fail to differentiate between consensual intercourse and violent rape. Victims go to them expecting justice, and end up being prosecuted,\u201d Stirling added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey not only invalidate their victimization, they actually punish them for it.”<\/p>\n

All sex outside of marriage is illegal in the UAE, \u201cirrespective of any relationship you may have with your partner in the UK\u201d\u00a0according\u00a0to the British government\u2019s foreign travel advice for the middle eastern country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s against the law to live together, or to share the same hotel room, with someone of the opposite sex to whom you aren\u2019t married or closely related,\u201d reads the advice before warning that tourists \u201crun the risk of prosecution, imprisonment and\/or a fine and deportation\u201d if they\u2019re found to have broken the law.<\/p>\n
