Tony Perkins, a conservative broadcaster infamous calling natural disasters God\u2019s punishment for gay people, has had to flee his Louisiana home amid flooding of \u201cbiblical proportions.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Thousands of people in Louisiana have lost everything they own and need our help now,”\u00a0Brad Kieserman, the Red Cross’ vice president of disaster services operations and logistics, said in a\u00a0statement\u00a0about the flooding in and around Baton Rouge.<\/p>\n

One of those people is Perkins, the Louisianian told Ken Klukowski, the guest host of his \u2018Washington Watch\u2019 radio show.<\/p>\n

\u201cDown in Louisiana they\u2019re just being devastated by the impact of this storm, and it is tremendously ironic that one of the individuals impacted is actually the normal host of this show, Mr. Tony Perkins himself, whose home has been overrun by this natural disaster,\u201d\u00a0Klukowski said, introducing the president of the Family Research Council on the organization\u2019s radio show.<\/p>\n

Southeastern Louisiana was struck by a\u00a0“1,000-year”\u00a0rain \u2012 record two-day rainfall that ended early Saturday morning \u2012\u00a0triggering flooding\u00a0that has damaged at least 40,000 homes and forced the rescues of more than 30,000 people since Friday. At least 13 people have died in the flooding.<\/p>\n

Perkins, his wife Lawana, and their five children had to escape from their flooded home on Saturday\u00a0\u201cby canoe. We had about 10 feet of water at the end of our driveway.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family was then turned away from a shelter, but was eventually taken in for the night by a former member of their church\u00a0\u201cin God\u2019s provision.\u201d\u00a0Perkins is currently serving as the interim pastor at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, which was damaged in the flooding that has affected 80 percent of the congregation.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re gonna look for what God\u2019s gonna do in this,”\u00a0he told Klukowski.\u00a0“I\u2019m asking those questions and I\u2019m going to see.”<\/p>\n

In a 2015 interview, Perkins agreed with the assertion of his guest, Messianic Jewish pastor Jonathan Cahn, that\u00a0Hurricane Joaquin\u00a0\u2013 which had devastated many Caribbean islands \u2013 was a sign that God was angry about the legalization of gay marriage and abortion.<\/p>\n

“God is trying to send us a message,”\u00a0Perkins told Cahn.<\/p>\n

It was a claim he did not repeat on his radio show while discussing the flooding of\u00a0\u201cbiblical proportions\u201d\u00a0in Louisiana.<\/p>\n

The Family Research Council is classified as an\u00a0anti-LGBT hate group\u00a0by the Southern Poverty Law Center.<\/p>\n
