Following in the footsteps of the US, Israel announced its exit from UNESCO, citing \u201cattacks\u201d by the organization. The move comes after 128 UN members voted to reject the US\u2019 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

The decision was based on the UN-run agency\u2019s\u00a0\u201cattempts to disconnect Jewish history from the land of Israel,\u201d\u00a0Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said. He added that the official letter of withdrawal will be submitted by the end of the year and that Israel will effectively leave the organization by the end of 2018.<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed Israel\u2019s envoy to UNESCO, Carmel Shama-Hacohen, to officially announce the withdrawal, Haaretz reports.<\/p>\n

In doing so, Tel Aviv joins Washington, which announced in October that it will leave UNESCO due to its \u201ccontinuing anti-Israel bias\u201d and \u201cthe need for fundamental reform in the organization.\u201d According to Haaretz, Netanyahu made the decision after a series of discussions centered around Israel\u2019s desire to not leave the US isolated in the move.<\/p>\n

According to UNESCO regulations, a member state\u2019s exit takes effect on December 31 of the year after the official letter of intent is submitted. Even though the US made its official announcement earlier in October, both countries will leave the agency at the same time.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s announcement comes after 128 UN member states voted on Thursday at the General Assembly to reject US President Donald Trump\u2019s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Nine states voted against the resolution and 35 nations abstained.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the vote, initiated by a number of Arab and Muslim countries, Prime Minister Netanyahu said he appreciated that \u201ca growing number of countries refused to participate in this theater of the absurd.\u201d He also thanked Trump and US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley \u201cfor their stalwart defense of Israel and their stalwart defense of the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s relationship with UNESCO has deteriorated since October 2016. Tel Aviv suspended ties with the organization after a draft resolution noted the importance of Jerusalem to three world religions \u2013 Christianity, Judaism, and Islam \u2013 but made no reference to why the city is significant to Christians or Jews.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust withdrawing, just leaving the field [of UNESCO] to others is not acceptable to many Israelis who also don\u2019t think that the accent that some politicians put on the Jewish character of Israel is appropriate,\u201d Amir Oren, an Israel-based columnist, told RT.<\/p>\n

He said the decision to leave will hurt Israel\u2019s cooperation in education, science and the arts, and possibly affect financial aid from UNESCO.<\/p>\n
