{"id":252574,"date":"2018-10-24T14:05:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T18:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rael.org\/?p=252574"},"modified":"2021-04-26T15:15:06","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T19:15:06","slug":"dutch-silly-walks-crossing-is-a-hit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noproxy.rael.org\/zh-hant\/dutch-silly-walks-crossing-is-a-hit\/","title":{"rendered":"Dutch \u2018silly walks\u2019 crossing is a hit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>RAEL\u2019S COMMENT:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Do it everywhere!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A Dutch town has officially opened a &#8216;silly walks&#8217; road crossing, in honour of a classic sketch from the 1970s BBC comedy programme Monty Python&#8217;s Flying Circus.<\/p>\n<p>Spijkenisse near Rotterdam has replaced the usual crossing sign by the town hall with one of a man with a bowler hat and briefcase flinging his leg high in the air, in emulation of John Cleese&#8217;s performance from the &#8216;Ministry of Silly Walks&#8217; sketch, NOS public television reports.<\/p>\n<p>Aloys Bijl, a local fan of the programme, saw a similar sign put up by a prankster in Sweden, and asked Spijkenisse council to make an official version.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cleese parodied a man from the ministry, and sometimes strange things do happen in town halls,&#8221; he told the AD news site.<\/p>\n<p>Alderman Jan Willem Mijnans liked the idea, and agreed to preside at the not-very-formal opening of the rebranded crossing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s nice to see people crossing the street with a smile on their face, and we hope lots of people will do so,&#8221; he told the expectant crowds, before trying out his own silly walk.<\/p>\n<p>The crossing is one of the busiest in town, but Mr Mijnans assured the public that, no matter how silly their progress, &#8220;traffic rules still apply, and cars have to stop as normal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the sign will revert to the original if it proves to be more of a distraction than an aid to road safety.<\/p>\n<p>The people of Spijkenisse have taken to the idea with great enthusiasm, and filled social media with clips of pedestrians crossing with a variety of outlandish gaits.<\/p>\n<p>Aloys Bijl was also on hand to show passers-by the 12 steps of the traditional\u00a0John Cleese silly walk.<\/p>\n<p>Towns and cities from Ottawa in Canada to\u00a0Orje in Norway\u00a0have indulged joke &#8216;silly walks&#8217; signs before, but this is the first time a council has put one up itself.<\/p>\n<p>Monty Python remains popular in the Netherlands, and John Cleese opened a large\u00a0Silly Walks mural\u00a0in the city of Eindhoven two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>At least one Twitter user hopes the Spijkenisse crossing is only the beginning of a local celebration of Monty Python sketches, noting &#8220;I can&#8217;t wait for a\u00a0Fish Slapping Dance\u00a0festival&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-45938724?fbclid=IwAR0VSwil_W9qMbj7ieKoh_T8Y4Ld6KJ-iHUdqM7PKzFgeAIhRtc7rjMYM_I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-45938724?fbclid=IwAR0VSwil_W9qMbj7ieKoh_T8Y4Ld6KJ-iHUdqM7PKzFgeAIhRtc7rjMYM_I<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RAEL\u2019S COMMENT: Do it everywhere!
